I was on the road this last week and only had a little time to hunt, but hit one small outlet that's been a good place to find treasure over the years. Its a little sterling silver basket made by Whiting Mfg. of NY. I believe by the double headed griffin mark it can't be later made than 1926. It was priced at $6.50 and weighs exactly 100 grams on my scale. It is monogrammed, but sure clean up nice and with no major damage it's a rather nice little piece of silver.

That's a nice little thing.

Yes, you’re broadly correct about the date. The Whiting Manufacturing Company used that mark from 1866 until they were acquired by Gorham in 1924 (and fully absorbed into Gorham by 1926). I provided a little more information on how to date Whiting’s pieces on another thread recently, which you may not have seen, so here it is again with a bit more detail than previously.

Whiting only introduced date marking on their silver from 1905 onwards, so if there is no date mark it’s between 1866-1904. The date marks used thereafter from 1905 to 1924 were strange geometric symbols and I believe I can see one below the design number. You’ll be able to see more clearly than I can from your photograph, but it looks like it may be the date symbol for 1916.

These were the symbols, and below I have imaged them again as they most usually appear on the silver itself.
