Picked this up at a thrift today for 50 cents. Was wondering if anyone could help with the makers mark? I think the rest is London assay mark (leopard), lion passant (silver quality mark), O in that shield i think is 1889 not 100%. The sovereigns head duty mark is from 1871 i think, also not 100%. But cannot find anything on the makers mark, any help is appreciated.

Sorry I think it is a type of teaspoon maybe? It has a monogram (not sure on letters. WFI maybe?) and it weighs in at 17.2grams.

Welcome to Tnet

Nice spoon. Itā€™s Sterling silver, London assayed, and with the date letter for 1889. Date letters didnā€™t necessarily change on 1st January and your spoon was assayed between 29th May 1889 ā€“ 1st May 1890. The requirement for a duty mark was dropped on 2nd May 1890 and then the date letter ultimately moved on from ā€˜Oā€™ to ā€˜Pā€™, without the duty mark.

I donā€™t recognise the makerā€™s mark but it seems to be both distorted and damaged. Perhaps ā€˜Jā€™ (or possibly a stylised T) and then ā€˜Hā€™ with something undecipherable in between the letters. I drew a blank on that. The monogram wonā€™t help much since it will be a customer-requested addition for family initials (sometimes company initials).

The bowl shape is typically what we call ā€œmustard spoonā€ but was used for serving condiments and accompaniments in general.

Aahā€¦ I looked more carefully at your pictures and the maker mark is clearer in your first picture than it is in the close-up. Itā€™s a small ā€˜Jā€™ and ā€˜Hā€™ with a larger ā€˜Sā€™ in between, which is for Joseph & Horace Savory of London. The mark was registered in 1884 and in use until 1893.
