I need to buy stock in Craigslist...another AMAZING Craigslist "Find"

A guy posted a coin collection, didn't list how many coins or what type. I gave him a call just to see what he had.

He told me the coins belonged to his grandfather, and he started to describe them. He said there were a few big pennies, a commerative silver collection, a few indian head and odds and ends in a zip lock bag. I offered him $75, thinking I would at least break even on the value of the silver and a few bucks each for the larges, expecting to be in poor condition...he gladly accepted.

I was anxious to see what I had bought and to see if I had made a wise investment on a whim. The pictures speak for themselves....

The only issue I have with some of these are they were taped to a piece of felt in a frame for display, so there is adhesive stuck one side of each coin...old adhesive. Any suggestions on how to get that off safely? Other than that, I think I did pretty well eh? :o :o :o

First three LC's in the photos, plus the 2cent and the LC after it have been "whizzed" but I'd say you still got a good deal on all of that.

You might try WD-40. It cleans off the adhesive from stickers on new appliances. Sounds crazy but it works.

The fact that they look Orange, yet have a good bit of wear on them. So the color of 'em looks "off." Normally when you see that worn, yet shiny look--expecially an unnatural luster, it's a big tip-off.

Nice pickup. What is "whizzed" :dontknow: ? Does that mean cleaned with a certain product..or cleaned in general?

I'm tempted to answer the previous post with something vulgar, but I won't... ;D. Cleaned or not, that looks like a good buy at $75.

I used the Rosingal <sp> Lighter fluid (Zippo type) that is in the plastic yellow bottle to take old adhesive off of items that I have purchased. It even says on the bottle that it is great for removing adhesive labels. I saturate the end of a paper towel and just apply it to the adhesive lable area and apply a bit of pressure so that it works its way into the sticky stuf. After a bit you can just rub it of.
Great Craigslist find there as well.

Those were the three that were in the display frame, so that makes sense that they were cleaned for that purpose. I was actually suspicious of the luster, but I needed someone to confirm it before I would actually believe it

I'm still happy, hell the 3-Cent pieces and half dime were worth it for me ;D

I think you got a good buy, but ALL of those LC's have been cleaned with some kind of cleaner.....Not good for resale. You prbably paid a little less than what they are worth. Sorry to bust your bubble. My own opinion. Hogge

Re: I need to buy stock in Craigslist...another AMAZING Craigslist "Find"

For removing old adhesive, try soaking the coins in rubbing alcohol from the drug store. There is a good chance this will work. If not, try denatured alcohol from the hardware store. After each soak, use a soft toothbrush to brush away traces of the adhesive. Then if necessary, wash the coins gently with non-detergent Ivory dish soap. Rinse thoroughly.

Great group of coins, BTW!
