Couple Mercs 20 & 29, Gnared up wheats, CLEANED UP 1804 Half Cent & 1864 2-Cent

Had to change up my 1700's hot spot for a park yesterday. Pulled '20 &29 Merc, and 7 gnarred up wheats that were close to a brackish body of water. Can barely read dates, but saw a 35, 41, and 41.

The one merc cleaned up with baking soda and a rub of the fingers, but the other one isn't budging with anything! Do I resort to electrolysis? Do I even waste my time on one 1929 merc? Any suggestions?




Also, I am posting my peroxide treated 1804 Half Cent and 1864 2-Cent piece that I found and posted last week in my other continuous mega-thread which seems to have died. See http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,182228.0.html for some other cool finds from that location.

( I also thought the peroxide results could use some exposure since the 2 cent came out so well) Check it.

You can try laying the badly tarnished dime on a piece of tinfoil inside a sauce pan. Cover with baking soda, pour boiling water over that and then let it simmer on the stove for ten minutes or so. The soda/water/tin foil is a kind of electrolysis. You then remove the dime, polish it with a cloth and depending upon the amount of tarnish, repeat the whole process.

Those are some nice finds.

I remember having a day similar to that about a yrs ago in a old park. Except I had a 1803. The dime would take hrs to hand clean. I've done it before. Takes to much effort. Tumble it for about 4 or 5 hrs. Use dish soap and water. Fish tank gravel and a half cup of cold water. It will come out new again.

Wow, the obverse of the half cent and the 2 cent are in really sweet shape!The few old coppers I have found are all toast.I would love to find an old coppa in that shape.WTG.

Wow, that is one sweet Half Cent Bud!! I love the 2 Center too Congratulations!

I would cook that dime with electrolosys, that black will cook off in no time flat. I do that to all of my water recovered silver, no matter what it is. Seems like if they have been in the water any length of time they turn black up here.

I agree on the electrolysis. The black crud comes off in big flakes frying in the tank.

GREAT JOB on the peroxide cleaning. Make sure you soak that HC in water to remove all the peroxide from it now.

I wouldn't electrocute the dime--unless you have lots of experience. If you really want to remove the black oxidation from it, baking soda and a drop or two of water, rubbed between two fingers will work fine. Destroys any collectors value, but it is common-date silver anyhow--and you may wish to do this to make it more display-worthy.

Tried that already...no effect...I will leave it as is....no need to waste time on it. I used to zap some of my nasty salt water silver to practice, but they seemed to get a purple tint to them, so I no longer do it.
