My first Liberty Cap Half Cent! YAY ETRAC!!!!

Went out with a detecting buddy today and wound up hitting a home that we have hit time and time again and I really thought it was completely worked out. This site has a home that has been there since about 1640 and maybe an acre+/- of detectable land. Between myself and two of my other mding buddies it has produced over 10 LC's! This was the first time at the property for me since I bought my new ETRAC and it's finally earning it's $1600 price tag! The ETRAC picked up this coin at around 10-12" down! This machine is incredibly precise! The pinpoint was dead on on this half cent at a foot!
As far as the half cent goes, I don't think I'll get any date off it but through pencil rubbings and going through a lot of photos and comparing what I can make out on the coin. That puts it in the 1794-1797 range, my oldest yet! It is toasted but I'm still lovin it! I also found a 1920 wheatie.
My md buddy filmed the recovery and hopefully he will be able to post the footage. Thanks for lookin!

I'm wondering if warm peroxide might help that coin? I'm not recommending it. Maybe someone else might have an idea. It looks like some of the crud will come off... Hopefully leaving some detail. I see Liberty and the little bow at the bottom of the reverse. I think I will have the "edited" video posted tonight. Congrats again! If you clean it, post the pics.

You can narrow the date down by looking for a lettered edge, if none than that would eliminate 1794. If it has a lettered edge it could be 1794 or an early minted 1795. The most common date found is 1797(non lettered edge), 1796 is rare and a unlikely find.

If you cannot tell if there is a lettered edge or not, if you could weigh the coin, that could also eliminate a year or two.

1794 and 1795 lettered edge weigh more than non lettered edge 6.74 grams for lettered and 5.44 grams for non lettered edge.

Thanks everybody! Don, the edge is in really bad shape and thin, If there was any edge lettering it's long gone. Wish I had a scale that was capable of measuring weights like that. I'm just starting to really get the hang of the new machine but I can already tell once I get it down well it will be an incredible piece of equipment! Thanks again!

i think that is a bust style half cent. if it was a cap style, the neck would be pointy. the date should be 1800-1808. still a great find. good job.
