I got out today with a couple buds for what I am sure will be one of the last hunts of the season...getting cold. We had permission to hunt a yard where a 17th century homestead had been. I didn't do too bad. The green coin is a George I penny (edit: ID'd by Don and confirmed to be a 1694 William and Mary half penny) and the other is a George II (1749) penny. As usual the gound wasn't too kind but they look much better in person and the Geo.II should clean up nicely.

Also found a handfull of musketballs and a colonial shoe buckle. Thanks for looking.

Nice hunt, the KGI copper is a 1695-1701 William III Halfpenny or possibly a 1694 William and Mary Halfpenny. :)

Re: A Couple Colonials (1st 1600's Coin)

Thanks Don...closer inspection shows it to be a 1694 William and Mary...my oldest coin yet!

While hunting the home owner showed a collection of relics that she and her husband have picked up throughout the yard without a metaldetector. Finds included a 6 pound cannon ball, a beautiful French trade axe and a 1693 French silver coin! Very inspirational!

I guess there is no way to clean the William and Mary to bring out a little more detail is there? Maybe just a little wax?

Actually, that is about average for a William coin, the usually are almost blank on the back, and with the most detail showing on the ribbon side of the Obverse (left side). You can try to clean some but wear is wear, and you cannot bring back into view what has long worn away! :D

Yep...that's what I thought...here's a pic of the other side. Well worn as well.

Romeo,
You really find that old stuff - truely "Colonial". 8)

So it's a William and Mary 1694...what is the significance? How many were minted? What's the value?

Interesting that the owner found that old silver...got to be more there....Good Luck.
