Took a day off to help the Archies & see how they were getting on.

When I wasn't helping in the trenches I continued the gridding of the stubble area where Dad & I had given up on Saturday. I keep telling Dad that we should carry on as we always stop before the finds start again. We had no roman coins between us from this field in 2.5 hours, but today I had 6 scrappies.

Star find was a Heraldic shield shaped stud, 14th century, with 3 Lions of England & a red enamel background.
Unusual large broken Lead Token - 'CLUB 1822' & TF on reverse.
Lead cherub face mount - medieval?

Good day out helping the 'dig'

Just got back from the monthly shop.

Most of the time I was detecting outside of the trenches. Although I did 3 trenches which had been widen & drained of water. Only got a couple of nails for the archies :D Funny thing was I had 3 scrappies before their first tea break on the stubble. They are always thrilled with the things I find. Most of them go years with only getting pottery & bone.

The farmer is happy for me to hand over all the maps we have made of the fields they are doing the digs on. This is a brave move because it may cost her thousands for future work. Its good to be able to work with this group & over lay my surveys with theirs & get a fuller picture. These Archies have won another contract which runs though other fields I cover, so we will work on other projects in the future

Crusader..where about in England are you from. I lived in Swindon for just over 3 yrs when I was stationed htere with the AF. Wish I'd known about MDing then, it sounds like a AWESOME place to detect. Hey another reason to tell my wife I can do when we move back there if she has her way

Mixed feelings, many archies only see the holes in the trenches after the night before so are not so happy. However most see the benefits of using our skills which we give at no cost to them. Also its like society, there are good & bad archies like good & bad Detectorists. I know of Archies that have helped themselves to the finds to fund their underpaid jobs. Therefore the answer to your question depends on who you speak with.

Hi Cru, I suppose it was nice searching for these items. Was Cru-dad with you? And what is the lead object, last photo, just to the upper right from the nice buckle? Nice finds for sure! Glad to see you still getting out in the current weather!
