gotta love tokens " Updated with new pics"and link to cleaning results

Howdy all,
Went back to the spot that has kicked loose the 2 Buffalo's. No buffs today but got a few keepers. As per usual I got my share of clad and trash, then nailed the 43s war nickel followed by the 40s wheat. The next was the 1923 50 centimes chamber of commerce token from France. Was getting ready to call it quits when I got the last signal. Real faint at 6 inches, so I thought wheat on edge. I dug the plug and check the hole but the signal is gone. I figure maybe it was a false signal or bit of iron, but recheck anyway. So I put the plug back and check again, and bam it's sittin on the top. It had flipped out when I had turned the plug. It turned out to be a Tacoma, Wa. Transit token. The first I have ever found. Not sure if it is for the old trolley or not. I found the same one on-line and it was circa 1938. Detectingfreak is comin down tommorrow, and I am gonna set him loose on this place with his SE, and see what he can find. Also got the skeleton key which doesn't happen often. So not a bad day at all. Happy Holidays fellow T-Netters.

Update
I was going through the trash from todays hunt and got a surprise. I took a closer look at what I had originally thought was a rusty washer. It was not a washer at all but another war nickel with a degraded steel wheat stuck to it. I was able to clean the reverse of the nickel but not the obverse. Any ideas on how to clean the rust off?

Here is the link to the cleaning results with the key.

Tokens are God's tears of joy, raining down on us. Or something to that effect.

Love tokens......... so many out there and they are all different :icon_sunny:
I agree. I just don't find them nearly often enough. I guess that makes them that much more cool when I do.

You might have success with electrolysis on the nickel. I've had success with badly corroded silver in electrolysis, but never tried a silver nickel. It has other metals as well as silver, so I'm not positive what it will do.

Thanks Cheese. I will pick a few more brains, and if thats the common thought I will give it a shot. Might be neat experiment.

Great digs JuJu - I've slowly but surely become addicted to tokens. Just as CJ stated - so many different types out there...

As far as cleaning your war nickel - I've had some success with white distilled vinegar. Let it soak (check it once or twice an hour) and then rinse and dry. Or the soft toothbrush and very mild soap with warm water afterward works too...

Nice token and finds! That French coin must be aluminum. I sometimes use naval jelly to clean rust off not so important coins. HH, Mike

The nickel is in the bath right now. I will post results when it is done.

Now you can say that you are one of the VERY FEW detectorists that has dug a Steel Cent. That is Cool!
