Most Valuable Coin I've Ever Seen

..much less held in my hand.

A gal from Bingo said last Sunday that she wanted to bring in a California gold coin this week. I told her I'd bring my newest Red book.
She brought it; I looked it up; and I was amazed. It was 'tarnished' inside its little soft plastic envelope, but Harriet said, "It's gold".

1850 Baldwin & Co. $10 gold piece.

Red Book says $32,500 in F condition. I don't know what this one would grade at or whether it can benefit from conservation, but I'll be continuing research on it for her tomorrow. Zounds!!

It was 'tarnished' inside its little soft plastic envelope, but Harriet said, "It's gold".

That coin, without a doubt, needs to be authenticated, graded, and slabbed by the appropriate grading/authentication companies.

It's an extremely rare and valuable coin if it is real. One thing I've read about the 1850 (Popular Cowboy design) is to beware of restrikes from copy dies!

I wouldn't get too excited yet, there were more replicas made than there ever were originals, and gold does not tarnish.

Right. 'Tarnish' was my word, and I saw replicas / restrikes on eBay. What do you call the brownish bits on the coin in the link below?

The one Stack's sold for about $40K was ANACS-'graded' as "Genuine".

Is that what the "tarnish" looked like on the ladies coin?

I don't have a picture of the lady's coin. Those are other examples.

I can only guess its iron contamination from a foriegn object. Unless they were mixing stuff in the gold they shouldn't have.

Yes, could be iron contamination, also they note this piece may be sea salvaged, could have something to do with that. I guess when you are selling a coin of this value it is "toning"! Hope your friends is a real one!

Re: Most Valuable Coin I've Ever Seen

She's taking the coin this week to John Abbott of Birmingham, MI. He will tell her Real or Replica for free.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for her.
If it's real, I'll try to get some pics and will post any valuation info.

Thanks to all for the informative comments.

Re: Most Valuable Coin I've Ever Seen

When I was a kid I found one of those in a pin ball machine at a bowling alley my mom worked at in st. louis. I really thought I had something when we looked it up, LOL now. It was fake but sure was the neatest thing I ever seen. I could even bend it with my teeth and told my friends thats how you test it to make sure it was gold. My son has that coin now with all my other coin collection, X took them and gave to the kids when we got divorced, I was going to give it to the kids anyway. HH JYD
