I believe that is the Kentucky state button,civil war era.Chances are strong itis the real deal,a rare one!!!!!!

If you have the dm *EXTRA* on your button (I do not see it in the photo), then According to Warren C. Tice's book Uniform Buttons of the United States 1776-1865 This button would be Identified as a Kentucky State Arms Militia Button.

Stars are present on sides of the legend, 23 mm. Waterbury Button Company made these during the 1860s.
"WATERBURY BUTTON CO. / *EXTRA*" dm (depressed mark) between two rings of dots


My best guess without *EXTRA* dm is post civil war, circa 1890-1910
