Shine,

nice artifact;

for your info:

attached photo of pocket watch given to my grandfather 1930's early 40's; Note "Illinois". Watch was given to my mother and then given to me.

The Illinois Watch Co was the most successful of the midwestern companies after Elgin. The company was founded in 1875 as a spin off from Elgin and was bought by Hamilton in 1922. Hamilton operated Illinois as a separate division and many of the most popular Illinois watches were actually Hamilton products. (dates fit in with the area you were hunting.)

have a good un.........

Just thinking,

could that be the back of the watch rather than a cover? (# would be I.D. inside watch back).

Just speculation, but if there is a set of railway tracks close by could be from a railroad employee. They all carried good quality watches because of keeping close schedules back in the days before automation. Nearly every example I have seen has a picture of a train engraved on it. My wife retired from a shortline railway and has one that is silver plated, 17 jewels, made back when watches were of quality. JIM
