I got this strong mixed signal and I started not to dig it up because I assumed it was a trash pit. When I finally got it to the surface, I could not believe what I was seeing! It's a US WWII ammo can full of spent rounds. The first thing I thought was maybe the can was full of plundered war loot but after prying it open, saw it was just full of spent rounds which was still cool. I think they are 30 caliber US and I wish I knew the story behind them. I know the US came through this part of Germany at the end of the war but there was not a whole lot of fighting.

Cool find and probably a lot of effort to dig it out. They look like the standard 5.56 mm rounds. HH, Mike

The box was only about seven inches or so deep. At first after I got the edges uncovered I thought that it might be an old land mind ,so I dug wide around it until I could see what it was. The cool thing is inside the box also contains all the bands that were used to belt the ammo together. The only marks on the rounds are 5 2 T W stamped on the butt of each round. Any help on that would be great. I know they are American rounds because of the can. So far I have only found one German rifle round in this area . I have been told that there is an old WW2 German ammo dump about 20 miles from here but I think I will stay clear from that spot.

I just looked at one of my brass casings and it has 5 3 T W on it. I don't know what it means but I think it's a 7.62 round. I stay clear of a few ammo dumps I know of around here. HH, Mike

Hey Bman, your mailbox is full! Here's what I sent back: German coins, 1601 to present, author N. Douglas Nicol. I have the second edition, don't know if there is a third out yet. Was able to get mine so called used but it looked brand new when I received it, saved a few bucks. Check on Amazon and compare prices. It's a nice thick book and they are still researching the coins, I can't imagine trying to compile a book like that as every duke of Earl in Germany seemed to have there own coinage. I'll upgrade in a few years. Found a 1765 milled silver from Bayreuth yesterday, local town around here, 1/3 is broken off but I got the part with the date, LOL! HH, Mike

I believe 53 is the year of manufacture; TW is the manufacturer, Twin Cities Ordnance Plant.

Good info, they must have been lost on a standard training mission some 8 years after the war.
