I think that is the oldest coin looking thing I have ever seen. Find out what is and where it's from and repost it.

Great find.

Could be some kind of unknown colonial coin. Send it in to Mark Parker.

Anybody else think it's odd that there are Roman numerals on one side and regular numbers on the other?

First of all, it's got to be one of the coolest things I've seen posted on here!

Second, I've Googled my eyes out and can't find anything about it.

Third, looks to me the right picture is of Noah's Ark with animals inside it.

Keep up the good work and keep showing your neat finds!!!

Hey JD, super cool. Possibly a token rather than a coin. What was the site like where you found this? I agree. Send a picture of it to Mark Parker. Congrats on a fantastic find...Lance

Ok...I think I have it.

I believe it is a Spanish 8 maravedies coin, from the era of Philip III (1598-1621) or Philip IV (1605-1665)

It appears that even though some of the coins were minted before the year shown on the coin, sometimes they were overstruck with new dates, markings, etc.

Here is a page with a lot of coins that are in much better shape, but have similar markings:

http://www.ancientcoins.ca/modern2.html

Here is a coin with similar markings from that page. Note the way the date looks (1641 according to the website), and the overstrike of the "VIII". You have the Roman numeral VIII on yours, though the last "I" is pretty messed up. Kinda interesting how there was no real quality control....they just would overstrike the coin any place they saw fit.

Here is another similar one:

I am curious also...where was this found? Is it made of copper? How deep underground was it? You might want to do a very careful search of that area if there is any possibility of more of these being there (well, it is ALWAYS possible haha).

Wow...amazing what info I find when I decide to do research for people here LOL!

Anyway....MY GOD! :o

A webpage with coins for sale dating back to the Dark Ages!

Sorry, I get so sidetracked lol....

I swear....I keep thinking to myself you can't get much old stuff like that out of the ground except the NorthEast! I learn something new every day!
