Nice spring morning & a pleasure to be out detecting

My most recent outing (this morning) was to a town called Ruthin, about 12 miles from my home in North Wales. The morning started of quite cold, with a hint of frost on the ground. Within a couple of hours the sun was beating down & it was jackets off time. Not a great deal found - apart from about a dozen bullets, part of a silver spoon & a two coins. The oldest of the coins being a halfpenny from King George III, dated 1806. Very encrusted but a nice coin never the less. Attached is a scan of the coin & a photo of the area in which it was found - the local council are in preparation laying out a number of soccer fields on the land. The prepared area being over 100yards wide & over 600yards in length - although the photo makes it look smaller!

Well done Hodge! That countryside is beautiful indeed.

Tell me - what did that halfpenny register as on the Ace250?

What a beautiful area. Before I read your post I was looking at the pic figuring out where this was first. Quite similar to some Eastern Oregon Country. Great coins too!

Hi guys - in answer to your question (Thigh66) the halfpenny showed up as a '1 cent'. It was about 5 inches deep & gave a good solid beep...but it is quite a big coin, at approx 29mm.

Hi,

Welcome fellow UKer, nice to see more joining

Do you do ploughed fields?

Must be Roman stuff to be found, or were they not in the area?

Hi to my fellow brits... the photo is of Ruthin, about 23 miles from Chester. Romans right, left & centre in this area (not now of course!!). I've only been detecting since Oct '08, but my two mates have been detecting for many years & both have found loads of roman coins. My best find so far was a Wm III sixpence.

One of the few Legionary Fortresses in the UK. GREAT area.

Get out there on the ploughed land & find those Denarius.

For shaun7 - I have a photo of the sixpence, not very good due to extreme wear - but good enough to identify itself. Found 2nd Jan '09, in rock hard ground about 6 miles from my home.

Especially for shaun7.... King William III 6d. A brand new scan (of both sides).
Whats your best find?

Thats typical, the most worn area is where the date is :P

I got this one wrong in the field, his coin is a 1723 George I Sixpence :-[ Very similar but it has SS & C in the qrters between the shields.

my best coin find has to be my avatar! a silver danarius ;D probably the only time i've made crusader jealous :D :D

but i also really like a roman brooch i found (again with crusader)!
