I got out woods hunting this after noon and started a new area on the side of a hill.
It wasn't long and I got a 75 reading on the DFX and I'm thinking silver.
I started digging and I see leather so I widen the hole to be carefull.
The leather was two inches down and the lowest point of the leather was six inches.
I pulled at the leather pouch and it came out and the coins slide out on the dirt
and that's when I seen two gold coins laying on top of each other.
Man I finaly got gold and wasn't sure what they were untill I got home right after I showed MPfish
My neighbor and detecting friend. He keep puting one in his pocket and I was saying don't rub them.
They both are 1914-s Saint-Gaudens,Twenty.Dollar gold. There is writing on the edge
e plu.ri.bus u.num. "Latin. One out of many. The motto of the U.S." and 13 stars.
Yes i'm very happy . It's my first and second gold coins ever. I have pounded that place many a day and a lot of days I came home with nothing.
I'll try to borrow mikes camera with macro setting to get better pic's since my camera is only for general picture takeing. I hope you all can experiance the finding of a gold coin or two.

With some better photos, those should make the banner for sure. Wow!

Oh--and by the way, that staining can be removed with no harm to the coins by soaking them in wood bleach for a while, then rinsing them off with water.

The part that really fascinates me is that you were able to recover some of the leather and hardware, congratulations on such an interesting find! (and kudos for recognising the leather and making the recovery) There appears to be three smaller coins, what were they? ...oh yes, a banner no brainer ;D

Congrats on the find of a lifetime !

Two buckles on the leather.............Suggests a larger bag - maybe a saddlebag........... If so, I would be searching the area even more with your gain cranked because only two coins in such a relatively large bag would be kind of odd................ Might be somebody buried the bag along with two missed coins seperate from its contents.............. if so I would expect the rest to be buried deeper..........

Those are beautiful. A truly amazing find! Can you give any background on what happened in those woods? Obviously you need to keep the location a secret but what made you choose that location?
Thanks limegoldconvertable68. Woods hunting has been very good to me since all the mowed grass areas are detected out. I havent detected much in that location so I had to give it a go. I've been detecting 5 woods around Rochester and Oronoco Mn. They all are full of shotgun and rifle shells so a lot of hunters in the past. I have found 4 traps so there was trapers in those woods and farmers who put up fences. I have always found coins on the south to west slopes in wooded areas.
