Fresh from the dirt last evening as I was revisiting a corn field where 2yrs ago dug a bunch of buttons and a sweet 1864 2-center with some wheaties.

Spending about an hour there last night dug two more buttons and a small and thin little piece of silver. Thought I had a worn down Barber dime when I plucked it from the dirt but quickly seen the 1782 and got very excited.

Stupid me... I put it in my pocket with the button and it got scratched! Stupid me! Stupid me! Stupid me! Stupid me! :violent1:

This is only my 2nd reale in 6yrs detecting. The important features that we'd like to see is worn off, mint and value. It is slightly smaller than a US dime and this one is very thin.

Anyone have a good link for searching reales?

In my personal book... this is very cool!

Re: My oldest coin... 1782 1/4 Reale?

This is awesome, I didn't realize how small those were. I found a CT copper yesterday (1787) It was close to a foot in the ground. I also imagined it being a Large Heavy Chunk of copper. But it's actually not much larger than a quarter. Good job on that coin. Let us know what you find out.

1/2 reale...if it's the size of a dime.

Congrats, Coinz! That's a sweet find....scratched or unscratched.

i love old beat-up coins. those reale were often in circulation into the mid 1850s, and could tell a story or two.
congrats, dwayne

Re: Fresh from the dirt, my oldest coin... 1782 1/4 Reale?

I agree with Mona Lisa: If about the size of a dime (17.9mm) then the 1/2 reale at 18mm is the closest fit. The obverse legend will read: CAROLUS III DEI GRATIA 1783. The reverse: HISPAN ET IND R M FF (THE "M FF" ---mint and assayer's initials-- assumes the coin is from Mexico City). 90% + fine silver.

Great find.

... that's because I don't know diddly about them. Notice that I am looking for a good website to help me identiy these coins also.

... Thanks hon, I knew someone could be more informative than I about my own coin. That's why I described the size of it.

Nice coin and congrats. I wouldn't be too concerned with the scratch.
