Well, while my brother is on the sunny beaches of California digging up his diamonds and other rings, I was back in the button field with my relics. I can't believe him, two diamond rings in two weeks. No coins today, but a really nice old lock, which appears to be mid 1800 or a little earlier. It has a crown with the letters GP under it. Any ideas on identification would be appreciated. Also found four harness buckles and three buttons including a large colonial. Somehow an old drawer pull also appeared in the field. The rain held off, and it was in the upper 50's so it was quite comfortable. Thanks for looking...Lance

Awesome finds!! just curious...how do you clean and preserve your iron stuff?

Heres some stuff that came up on that mark:

"crown over an enjoined "GP" ( a London proof mark of the Gunmakers' Company) "

"NICHOLSON FLINTLOCK PISTOL......The top is a crown over what looks like a GP"

Funny, all that comes up is really old flintlock guns and stuff.....maybe a gun lock? Let us know if you find out anything on it ;)

Thanks Jake. appreciate the info. I use Loctite Extend after wire brushing and or electrolysis. Works great and I never have to do anything again with it....Lance

Any chance that the "GP" could actually be "GR"? I believe that the crown & "GR" mark appears on the drops of some British padlocks dating c. 1821-30, for Georgius Rex (King George IV); and on c. 1830-37 locks, when it stood for Gulielmus Rex (King William IV). Similar crown & initials marks were used on later British locks, also; for example, "VR" (Victoria Regina - Queen Victoria):

Thanks PBK, I think you nailed it. It appears that it could be a GR with a very weak R that looked like a P. That would date it. Thank you very much...Lance
