Hi, I was hunting a site that has produced well for me in the past and today was no differnt. I had been digging pulltabs for a while and then I dug this. This is the second cadet button I have found this year. It looks to have alot of detail left on it so I am not going to clean it anymore. Thanks for looking.

halfway down #cs 155 http://www.civilwarbuttons.com/csstatelist.htm

I'm having second thoughts on cleaning this button. I posted BuckleBoys link to cleaning buttons above, but I just read MontanaJims post on the what is it forum. If this button is that valuble, be very careful with the cleaning process. "Not" cleaning it will not reduce the value but cleaning it could. I would seek professional help with this one or not clean it at all. You know what it is. Leave it alone. It looks great the way it is.

Hot Damn, that's a FINE button! And a Valuable one too!

Did you polish it with toothpaste? If it had gilding on it, I don't know how that could've survived toothpaste and toothbrush--so I was wondering if what I was looking at was polished brass.

Best Wishes,

Buckles

Just lightly cleaned it in warm water using toothpaste and a childs toothbrush. I was wondering earlier, I thought it felt far heavier than the other buttons I've found, I think it is brass.

That is an okay cleaning method in this case, since it left the gold gilding on the button--but you have to be very careful with a toothbrush. I've ruined the gilding on a button before by using one.

Can you see the backmark, or provide a good photo of the back?

That is a BEAUTY.

Tice's button book does list this backmark, "on a ribbon with swallowtail ends" but for both listings of your backmark, Tice says that "this button was not found on Civil War Era VMI uniforms." It is still a valuable button, because of VMI's associations with the war, although the link posted in the other thread I think the list price is too high.

Best Wishes,

Buckles

Thanks BuckleBoy. The site is not civil war related. The other button found there was Id 'd on here 1840s-1860s . Dont know if you remember it or not but it was a button with a camel on it.

I most certainly remember that button, and the very lively debate about the Camel Corps.
