Royal Regiment of Artillery Button - Circa 1800

[West Jersey Detecting]

I got out to my favorite detecting spot today. I dug a large copper...It appears to be a counterfeit KG, but it is too far gone to be sure. I also dug a watch winder, and a bunch of buttons including a large "Dandy". Without a doubt, though, the old military button is the find of the day. It is a one piece, domed button. I can only make out the letters "ON.....ON"?.

Royal Regiment of Artillery. The one shown in Neumann and Kravics is 1780-1800. Pretty sure, but what do I know. NICE FIND NEIL. Looks exactly the same. Congrats Hogge

That is one nice button! I have what's probably a dumb question though. Is it absolutely certain that this design was not used a little earlier? I'm just asking because, as you know, the British troops camped on the western shore of the Delaware, and they numbered in the thousands.

Yes, but was flat.

Thanks for all the replies. As I began researching the button, I think it is a bit later, 1831-1840. That would also be in line with most of the other things I have dug at the site.

Here are some of the other digs, including the copper, the large Dandy and an 1883 IH that was also dug.



The copper is corroded, but I may see some writing. It is fairly thin and only had a VDI of 69, which is not unusual for counterfeits.

Hey Neil, I missed this post when it was first listed and was only able to find it due to your post about the possible regimental crown badge of today. Anyway, that's one of the coolest looking military buttons I've seen posted here on TNet.
Also, the remaining gilt is awesome!
