rjnail, The only hobo coins I have ever seen were modified buffalo nickles, where the Indian head was made to look like it had a beard & a derby hat. trk5capt...

trk5capt ;

?About 10 Years ago I found a HOBO PENNY.
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? I sent a Description to MARK PARKER & he told me Hobos Used What ever
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Coin they had at the time.
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?Preferably the Lowest Denomination.
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?As they Wanted to Turn as Much of a Profit as Possable.
Altho they were Mostly Traded for a Meal.

Your Right tho. Every Hobo Coin I'v ever seen, The Face was Altered.

Always thought a hobo coin was any coin,(usually pennies), placed on a rail road track. After it was flat they would
work a design into it.

all have a good un............

No such thing as a "Hobo Dime"

as Jeff has shown/proven,

hobo nickels were carved from Buffalo nickels by "hobo's" and Train hoppers/riders during the 20s & 30s, and that's where the term came from, and why,,,

again, nice love token!

P.S.

I have found 2 silver Love tokens, and 1 Gold love token in 20+ yrs of detecting,

will post pics of them tomorrow!

Those are neat.? Never had any idea about that form.

My Guess the Best Place to find them would be Fields

Right Before & Right After Rail Road Stations.

As The ones who Hopped Trains Would Jump Off Before the Train Stops,

And Jump on, After the Train Left the Station,

To avoid the Rail Road Police.

and also Camped along Creeks nearby the Station, But out of View.

The HOBO PENNY I found was near a clearing before a RR Station, But Very Crude Compaired to these nickels. I have it, But Until I can get a Friend with MACRO to take a Pic I Cant Post it.
Copper tones TOO Dark

when we were kids in Michigan , there were hobos that traveled the rails ,but would camp under neath the bridges ...all the neighbor hood kids would visit them ...haha and they would send us home for potatoes ,onions and other veggies ....then cook soup... mom would even send a loaf of bread or peice of ham back with us to give to them.,...they never harmed us , just told us stories or sang songs ...now i would never let my girls do something like that... I am going back and searching under that bridge...

Where at in MI???

That's where I'm from and where I'm at!

When I was a kid in the 60s/70s there was a place called "Hobo woods", and we used to take the hobo's food too! lol

Don't try it now days though!
