1883 Indian head Penny

I hunted a field last night I have gone over in the past without turning up any coins.
The mosquitoes were biting and I was getting nothing but iron
Then as the sun was setting, a positive hit.....a shotgun shell :P
Well... I will look around this area a little more.
Then another good signal at 7 inches by a patch of trees.
Out of the bottom of the hole a penny sized green disc!
OK I am getting eaten up, time to head in.

Turned out to be a pretty nice 1883 Indian head with a slightly ratty edge.





Then I had a brain fart and decided I wanted to clean of the dirt. Instead of grabbing the
microscope and a toothpick, I accidentally grabbed the boiling hydrogen peroxide !!!!!

I will spare you the after pics as you can barely even see the date now
Most of the surface flaked off.

Regardless of the condition of any IH....I still get very pumped up pullin them "feathers" outta the ground.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not....I have been blessed with some good Injun finds that did quite well with the peroxide bath. I just take it easy and soak them for just 10 to 20 seconds at first and inspect how they do to the treatment. Then go from there. easy does it though, if you have any copper disease/corrosion it will tear them apart quickly....Nice find and there are always more to go get..... jgas

Thanks Kirk, I have not felt like hunting in months, but I think I feel the passion coming once again.
This field is not expected to turn up coppers, but I have some new sites lined up that may produce

I knew not to use hydrogen Peroxide on a coin corroded in this way, but I guess I was not thinking straight.
This coin will just serve as another reminder of what NOT to do
