1700's Coin Found In Maryland Today..........

We were hunting the site of an old house today. Home is no longer standing, just old trees....After about 5 minutes I received a strong signal, dug down about 3 inches and found the coin. At first I thought it was an U.S. Large Cent, but a closer look revaled it was a Britain 1/2 penny from the 1700's. This is the second British 1/2 penny I have found here in Frederick County, MD. This one is in much better condition than the one I found before.

The coin on the front has: GEORGIVS III REX

The coin on the back has: BRITAIN NIA 1776

Good find but I think you have a British George III Halfpenny.

Decent KGIII Halfpenny, it is not a Machins Mills one however, most likely a counterfeit, but cannot tell for sure with the scan and not knowing weight. Odds against it being a Regal, ribbons not correct.

Don
was also going to say it was probly counterfeit. I'm pretty sure Don told me once that the 1776 was counterfeited alot... Maybe more counterfeits then regals... I am not sure..Don would know more then me I'm a beginner...

All 1776 would be counterfeit because the regal dates are 1770-1775. For that reason they are not real common counterfeits.

The coin above is probably 1775, the 5 can often look like a 6 to people who aren't really familiar.

Thanks Iron Patch... I was thinking that but thought I was getting my facts wrong... then what I "corrected" is what was wrong... Like they say always go with what you first think...most of the time it's right

Beauty!

It looks a l ot like the KGIII I found last year. I think it was called an "Aging George" type counterfeit.
