The first 2 hrs of my hunt were spent not finding a cellar hole from a plat map. I gave up and went back to my well hunted favorite site an early American gone by the time my 1902 map was made. After getting bored hunting the same old spot I remembered a stone pile at the site I had skimmed over last year and found a few iron buckles and had decided it was a shed or something. I put my sniper coil on and hit the rectangular stone pile again. All the first hits were iron stove parts and I thought maybe this was a home after all. My next hit was big and I figured just another stove piece but the target id was locked on copper so I had to dig and boom happy dance! War of 1812 artillery plate!

I tried a little aluminum jelly on it and it came out great LOL yeah right. Here is one I found on an auction website it was labeled 1818. If mine came out of the ground like this you would never have seen it cuz I would still be laying there dead clutching in my hand.

Here's a comparison of the two types one on the left is mine and the one on the right was dug by Vermont pack rat. Clearly there is a lot of difference in the detail. One of them is the 1810 and one of them is the newer version that went on until 1835 or whatever. I was told mine was the 1810 but I would love to have some confirmation either way

Those are some sweet Plates for sure...I remember Vermontpackrats...I found a different variety the next day...His went on the banner.. So mine just faded away in todays finds..lol I thought mine was a war of 1812 New York... But I found out later it wasn't...Still love it!!!

Here is the reference book and page with the pic of your plate. The 3rd edition of this book was published in January 2010. The Remarks state that it was long thought that this pattern denoted Light Artillery, but proof is lacking. They are now calling it a militia plate. The "Star of Stars" is the key feature and as we have seen there are several variations of it.

Yes, my reference library may be worth more than my collection.

This is the powder flask front that I found out the same place. It is supposedly quite rare. The u.s. is actually inside of a bugle that you can't see at the bottom because it is bent up. Also the button on the left was found very close to the belt plate I was told it is definitely pre Civil War it has no back marks

I think this flask might be worth getting restored.

I like the US marked flask. Can't see the buttons very well, but they look like two piece buttons. Is there anything on the shield?

The buttons are two piece the one on the left has nothing in the shield I don't think the cuff button does either but it looks more like Civil War era to me. The backmarkers unreadable on the small button but it was found on the other end of the site where more often Civil War related relics were found

Anyway the button on the left has more of a gooseneck appearance to it as far as the eagle is concerned. Once it dried out the patina was really peeling so I decided not to clean it. it is even harder to identify now. This is what it looks like now. I know this picture is worse but it's the only one I have in my phone right now it is the top center button in the photo

Bottom row the 4 matching general service buttons were found in the same hole at the other Cellar hole on this site. This site has 2 cellar holes about 75 yards apart I always figured Grandpa lives in the house with the belt plate and jr. Lived in the house with all the Civil War relics minie ball was also found close to the four general service buttons. These guys must have had some great stories to tell around the fireplace.

That's one nice looking plate. It looks kind of square is it a hat badge or a buckle?

Thanks relic ....it is square...but it is a plate...has the bar and broken hook on the back
