I went to my favorite park today and the lawnmowers showed up just as I
started detecting. I decided to go to my sisters house which was built in 1859
and do a little detecting. I got a hand full of clad eight wheats a 1988 Hot wheels
and an old bottle. The bottle cap says "E.R. Durkee & Co. New York" "Trade Mark".
The side of the bottle also says "E.R. Durkee & Co. New York".
The bottom of the bottle says "Bottle Patented" and the patent date seems to say
"April 11, 1817", but I think it actually says April 17, 1877. I don't think the numbers
came out very good when it was made, there is also some kind of diamond shaped
design on the bottom. I was able to take off the cap so I put in the rock tumbler
for a couple of hours and it cleaned up pretty good. Any ideas about the bottle?

Joe

Nice little haul there. Your sister must have kids. The car is a Hot Wheels 1998 Artistic License Series Alien.

You're right about the date, that would be 1877. E.R Durkee began as a drugist in Buffalo in the 1850's and moved to Brooklyn, NY in 1870. They were into bottling extracts and spices. Your bottle looks like it may have been a spice of some sort. The bottles will vary in value from $4-$25 if someone is willing to buy it. Still a nice find.

I was wondering if anyone knew a rough age for this bottle.
The cap is a screw on type and seems to be made of aluminum.
I thought that aluminum and screw on was a more modern type of cap.
Could it be from the late 1800s or is it more likely from the mid
1900s or later.

I think you may have 2 options. One is to post it in the What is it forum, or a bottle forum if they have one here. The second option is to find out where E R Durkee is located now and contact them for information. Perhaps the bottle was recycled and old, the cap is new :dontknow:

I know durkee is a name of a food / spice company -- the druggist made flavor extracts and sold em --did so well at it they went into full time spice dealing
