George Washington Inaugural Button--Eagle Type BUT.."Preliminary ID" Update

SOMEONE RUINED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AAAARRRRGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't believe it. My friend Roz and I took about a 3 mile hike in the woods and ended up near....what we call......."The Button Field". We've pulled about 50 buttons out of this particular field. When I pulled this thing out....boy was it heavy. Heaviest button I ever dug. The first thing I noticed was the crest. I told Roz I thought it was a GW Inaugural but it was too heavily filled with crud to positively ID. The orange pic shows the top of the crest and the head. The blue pic shows the tail feathers at 6 o'clock and to the right you can see the left leg that holds the arrows. It's in EXTREMELY rough shape but it IS a GW Inaugural. Doubt I'll be able to get the variety due to condition. Going to get a hold of my friend, Golden 1, to see if he can take better pics with a digital camera, as it may show better detail than my CRAP scanner! I guess I'm in the GWI Button club! Basically my #2 DREAM FIND. #1 would be a piece of Massachusetts Silver! I will post better pics when I get them. Does anyone think I can take this to a jeweler and have it heated, and bent upright without too much damage? I'll bet I could get better detail then. Is this a wise thing to do? Given condition, I don't think I have much to lose. Hogge

Congrats!!!! and welcome to the Club (mine was a linked states version) :D

I have seen the process of heating to unbend a relic used before on civil war box/belt plates, of course they have lead on the back. It might be an option with this button but it would have to be examined and done by a professional.

Excellent PBK. I'm going to give both of these guys a call today. Thanks. Todd Examining inside the bend, I can still see the shank. So, at least, that's still there.

Re: George Washington Inaugural Button--Eagle Type BUT...............

Hey Guys, Sending this off to Robert McDaniel in Alabama. I like what he had to say. Thanks PBK! Gonna cost me about $100 but that investment will make the button show detail , and hopefully, make it saleable. (If I so choose). Want to ID this as to variety also. Will post updated pics when I get it back. :hello2: The Hogge

Smart thing to do, I have seen his work and he does perform miracles and on relics in much worst shape than your button. It will be a good investment I am sure, whether you sell it or not.
