Sorry, I couldn't resist the twist on spelling..

Has anyone used Ketchup to clean their copper pennies? I've used it to clean the copper bottom sauce pans that I have owned for years. You just put a blob of ketchup about the size of a nickel on the bottom of the pot and smear it around with your fingers. After about 10 minutes you just wash it off. It looks as bright as it was the day it was made.

I just tried it on a relatively new penny (about 1975 or so) that was pretty brown. I washed it off after about a half hour and it looked pretty good. I've heard that it is the acidity of the tomatoes that cleans the copper.

Does anyone know if this would be damaging to any valuable old coins?
