Was detecting on some private land that this girl I know owns along the Saint John river. Unfortunately it was freezing out and the rain stopped the hunt short.

Found plenty of bottle caps, plenty of rusty old junk... a bit of clad...

and then I came across this little guy.

It is quite heavy, I'm thinking its possibly some sort of weight used a long time ago for fishing, but that's just a guess.

Any ideas?

One of the gents on the other forum I was on said that he used to make weights in his younger years just like this, using electrical copper wire for the loop and a matchbox as the mould.

It would hold long enough for it to set.... cool stuff.

I never did think of decoy weight.... You can tell I don't hunt much :P

ah duck decoy makes very good sense --the copper loop attaches to the decoy --the hole in bottom oif the lead is for the rope that links a group of decoys together *for retrevial -- several decoys on a long string -- you place them in position--when finished you --pull the string in and the decoys "come in"
