Buckleboy and BuckleDad Hunt

Hello All,


BuckleDad came to visit and of course we spent some quality time together with detectors on our arms.


I just wanted to post some photos of the places we went and what we found...



The first photos are of a great site from yesterday--A 1700s double log cabin tucked away near a creek:



















Today we decided to re-hunt some old (and good) spots of mine. BuckleDad is a dig-it-all kind of guy, and he makes some great finds. Today was no different. In clearing some of the iron out of a site that has given me a nice lock plate and some other good iron finds, BuckleDad managed to dig a very nice item. I believe it is a toy lathing hatchet, perhaps from a child's carpentry set. I was thrilled to see this one come up--and thrilled to see the look on Dad's face.











We also dug a good many buttons, some musketballs and other lead, and a few other doodads. Here are some photos of the finds:

Nice, story, pics and finds to compliment your hunt together. What more could one ask for to be able to get out with their father to do something like that. You are a lucky man, Buckles. Nice job. Love the buttons and the hatchet find

A PRICELESS hunt BB!! I believe Buckledad had a good time and you fellas made some nice finds. The old house still looks good. How many houses built today will be standing in 200 years? Regards, Quindy.

So true, especially after they've been abandoned. These houses today wouldn't survive 20 years of disuse.

Oh yeah, who the heck is Bill Hilly?

Yes, we missed those goodies before--be he and I also hunted a place I felt was worked out. Well, after 2 hours there all we had to show was a tiny pack rivet. The spot with the buttons and hatchet I figured still had some keepers left.

I think Bill Hilly must be some redneck with dyslexia.

Buck, it is always a pleasant time when you can hunt with family.

That site looks very inviting. I can picture the late 1700s Kentucky settler walking around the house with his frontier clothes on. Have you found any early coins there? You know they are hiding somewhere in the vicinity of that dwelling.

It's nice when finds will never outweigh the importance of the time you can spend with your dad.

Great post. I really liked this one, great setting, a good selection of finds from one of my favorite periods and a good story. I used to hang with my Dad and we had some great times (not detecting) but he passed 20 years ago. Once again thanks for this post it brought back some good memories.
How far do you guys normally have to travel to go detecting, and what is that item bottom left picture #7. I have found fragments of something similar.

The item on the bottom left is a broken up reed plate from a harmonica.

Great story Buck. A quality outing with the old man.Those pictures of the log cabin sure get my detecting juices flowing. Since every site CKK does is a vanished homesite It is nice to see these pics to show me what I'm missing. There is many of those type log cabins here in Pa but they were all detected out in the 80's. I am looking forward to seeing the Iron Brigade post their fall field finds. I am looking forward to finding the fall bounty myself. The past few weeks have been strange for me. No relics to speak of. Plenty of coins though. I attribute it to me wandering away from the iron patch to find the peripheral finds.Kyle and I will do a permission mission today after work. Probable new spot for tommorrow.Good luck in your endeavors.

Yes, this one was most certainly a Frontier Dwelling. We didn't find any coins (I think the spot had been hunted before).

Unfortunately they don't plow here anymore. It is all no-till farming. After harvest, they let the fields sit in stubble until spring, when they spray them to kill the weeds, and then they plant. The most they do is disc the fields.

I was quite pleased with the two buttons with designs on them. I like finding flat buttons, but the decorated 1830s civilian ones are the ones I'm really after.

They should have most of the soybean cut here in the next week (more rain yesterday will delay them). Then they'll start with a lot of the corn. Probably 40% of the soy is cut already. The combines were in the fields until after dark the last few sunny days we had.

I also like to see the old log structures that survived. They give me the power to imagine structures even when such buildings are long gone. And that is quite useful. Most of the still-standing old houses and cabins in my area have been hit (and this one was no different). Of the ones that there is no trace of on any map, and no chimney or other very visible sign--those are all virgin sites here.

Also, when I can see structures like that, it allows me to think more clearly about what life was like then. It gives me more context for the items I dig.

Great pics & post, loved the finds. The biggest & bestest treasure of all is the quality time spent detecting with your dad. That to me beats any find. Glad you two had the opportunity to hit the fields together.
