I always thought the bullets that looked like that on top had something to do with the rifle's ramrod. Maybe strong and forcefully tamped in the barrel with the ramrod or the shooter was in such a hurry he forgot to the step where you withdrew the ramrod and placed it back in position in the bottom of the rifle. Bruce Canton wrote about both sides shooting extra ramrods at the opposing side maybe to relieve boredom from the trench warfare of St. Petersburg. Don't ramrod me 'bro! Those flying ramrods must have made a weird noise as they passed by.

Pretty good odds ! Bullets are usually easy, it's the buttons that are elusive ! 2:1 ratio is good odds :hello2:

The bullet has a spiral in the top because it was "wormed" out (in other words, the bullet was pulled from the gun). This tool used to pull bullets from the gun left the spiral marks you're seeing in the lead. I'll try to find a photo of one.

If that is a .69 caliber minieball, you may be close to a picket post.

That crossed my mind, but the ones I have seen are more damaged/have a hole in to pull it out :-\
