Day 2 at Big Field yields 1817 Large Cent & first Eagle button!

That big field was calling me again. You know, the one where I was sure there had to be something there? This time I got there a little earlier and had a good two or three hours to hunt. I went right to the spot where I found the LC yesterday.

First, here is the iron I finally found. It is not the first thing I dug, we'll save that for later...

Looks like a bunch of junk, I bet. Yeah, well not to me. There are two good spikes here, much bigger than nails. I didn't put anything for scale, sorry. The rectangular thing has evidence of hammering on the poll or back, like it was used as a wedge or splitting tool. I likes it. I also have something in the electro bath at the moment, it looked like it had letters on it. We'll see. Iron with lettering = cool. Yep, and that square nut down there in the corner? Hand-made. Note the off-center hole. That is going into electrolysis. It looks to be quite an early piece.

So, the first thing I dug today was actually (guess what) another LC. The signal was another screamer. Once again, I thought I had a beer can. Was thinking maybe the sound would set off that little dog 1/4 mile away, even though I had headphones on. Well he kept his yap shut for a while, and 3 inches down was this prize:

So I says to that little dog over there (looking across the field): "You better believe I'm going to dig foil hits, you crazy dog".

And the third foil hit, after a couple pieces of pewter, was no less than an eagle button...

SCOVILL MF'G CO WATERBURY. I think that's 1850-1865, yes? Stoked.

I am going to continue my research to see if the resident of this house was a CW veteran. Quite possible.

Here are all the non-ferrous objects together, in their glory. I am pretty psyched also about the flat buttons. I just likes 'em. Sadly, the plow broke that crotal bell to pieces sometime in the past.

How I missed the iron patch yesterday is anyone's guess, seeing as I had been through this section before a couple times. Yesterday I wasn't finding iron, but today, yeah. There is quite a bit left. I think there are going to be some good iron relics there. We'll see in the next week or so if I can get back there. I have to work to earn some grocery money, so we can eat. Dang it, why does food and lodging have to get in the way of metal detecting!!

Anyway, about 4:45 pm, guess who started barking. Frantic, yelping, desperate to throw his voice across that 1/4 mile... that crazy dog again. I got outta there with the goods... but Mr. Dog, I will be back.

HH and thanks for looking.

Rusted.

Awesome hunt. Large Cents are always a fine delicacy. And buttons compliment a fine hunt.

This was a fun post to read. I like your style in posting, and I also like the way you hunt. Those are my type of finds there.

That's a nice 1817 you pulled--and the Eagle is in great shape. Best you could hope for from a plowed field.

Cheers,

Buck

Thanks romeo-1 and Sniffy! LC's are a delicacy, but if they were easier to find, I would probably become a Large Cent glutton!

Thanks for your kind comments, Buck! Though I like to find a bell, I guess I'm happy it took the plow hit instead of that large cent or Eagle button. It seems the manure they use on these fields is not as harsh as the chemicals, and you get nice green patination, to boot ;D

Thanks jgas! I'm still wondering what to do w/ that largie, since right now I don't have the patience for oil soaking, and I still want that nice green patina. Ah, maybe oil is in this coin's future after all.

Thanks Kyle! It keeps calling me. I hate to say it, but I might be hooked on coppers. That could become a bad habit, but I think that field will be ready. ;D

Thanks detectahead. Don't worry, you will find your first. Just keep at it. The Tesoros are great machines, once you get "in the zone" and learn their mono-tone subtleties, you will find they are excellent on coins and nonferrous relics too ;-)
