Hunting buddy, Buckshot, and I left work early yesterday and hit the deer-hunting lease while the deer hunters were still at work. We detected along a sandstone bluff that has a 4 ft carving of a pistol on it. The barrel of the carving points down so of course we were hoping it pointed to something. It didn't, but about 30 ft along the bluff in a shelter of sorts, Buckshot's MD sounded on a rock. It was small enough to turn over and look what popped out underneath it! To look around the surrounding countryside, there's nothing there, but some kid must have had a lot of fun chasing the bad guys around that bluff. I wonder if he ever thinks about the gun he lost? Here's pictures I took, Buckshot should be along shortly with pictures of the gun cleaned up. When we found it, we were hoping 30's or 40's, but now I think it's a 60's model?

Talk about needle in the haystack find. Wow...That's pretty cool. Congrats on the rock not being too heavy to lift! jgas

You know, that could have just as easily been a cache of money hidden under that rock. There's good stuff just waiting for you and Buckshot! Those old caves/bluffs could probably tell some great stories.
Thanks for sharing!

Yeah, I like the "made in the usa" best of all I think! No, I liked finding it under a rock best of all. Wait, just finding a gun close to the gun carving was the most fun. ;D I guess I liked the whole afternoon. I learned a lot about MDing also. Not sure what we'll do if the next rock is too big to flip over. It's kinda boggles the mind to look around there and wonder what else is waiting on us. Thanks for looking guys!

I would think that a 4 foot carving of a pistol on that cliff face would mean a lot more than a cap pistol. Do you think a kid would put that much work into "marking" the hiding place of his toy? Or would a kid possible see that carving and think it was "neat" and bury his toy there as part of someone else's "game".

Just curious.

There are names along with the carved gun, and there have been people infrequently in this area, I can see a kid getting to play here at some point while an adult worked nearby, and we think the rock just happened to fall on the gun after it was dropped. This bluff is sandstone and in a wonderful state of erosion, rocks of all sizes have fallen away from the bluff. Here is a link to the gun carving:

Happy hunting all!

As the years go by, and we accumulate different finds, you get stuff from every sort. You just filled the cap gun catagory, in a really good way.
