Went to WV for the thanksgiving holliday to a good freinds farm. Went detecting the first day i was there in a location that had a pony express stop back in the day . Found lots of iron a few peices ive never seen before in VA. Around the spring is where I found the fancy lookin sash buckle and the brass lock (any info on this would be appreciated).Well it was gettin dark so we headed down to the house for supper. After that my buddy was very excited and wanted to check out the yard at 9:30pm I said lets go . The property has a early 1800's barn down in the bottom wher the house stands ,the yard was full of bullet casings mostly from us over the years , but right when i was going to call it quits a belt plate poped out on it was two crossed flint lock riffles I've never seen a plate like this anywhere and still dont have clue to where or when is it from . In 1875 the us army used this symbol for the infantry but all ive found are patches no belt plates I know this should be whatsit but I hope one of you also have found one and can help with this.I went to see my freind at the stafford civil war reasearch center and he told me once again i found something he cant help me with.

Well done on your finds, I'm sure someone here can help you with your plate.
You may want to try and post it in the What is it? section
Congrats

Cool finds dirtdigger. If it's any help in dating your crossed muskets, the action looks more like cap and ball than flintlock. That might give you a later time frame for your search.

Is there any solder or any attachment marks on the back? It looks like an indian war period hat piece that was never cut out. There used to be tons of them and other hat pieces that were not finished sold at relic shows. They were all nondug though. I've never seen a dug one.

hey vayank .what do you think this !!i cant find anything on this as far as a plate goes only insignias. heres a pic of back it does have 3 solder marks on it .the us infantry had it in 1875 then it bounced around till 1922 when it went to the 2 crossed springfield muskets .69 flintlock's as far as there insignia goes but no plates though?

The solder marks are located like ti shoud be a buckle but I don't recall seeing one like that. I'll check and see if I can find out anything.

That's an interesting belt plate. I haven't seen one of those, which probably means that it is slightly post CW (my knowledge of that area is far worse than what I know about CW plates).

Still a great find--and the dating of the item is just a hunch.

Best Wishes,

Buckles
