The 2 inches of snow on the ground was not the problem, it was the 6 inches of solid frozen Clay! Hurt my feet jumping on the spade & was hard to get some of the finds out. We did manage 5 hours in the bitter freezing conditions but really enjoyed being out & it was sunny instead of sleet etc...

We always planned to return here when the rough ploughed field was graded, it had been rolled once but is still was less than perfect. So we put on the large Coils & set to work finding what we had missed late last year.

The more I use the 11'' XP coil, the more I'm impressed, super sensitive & I dug the Roman Silver at 8 inches (bear in mind the uneven conditions & snow), plus the largest Roman Coin at over 10 inches (I was shocked it wasn't a large piece of lead)

The Coils definitely made the day:

24 Roman Bronze Coins
Excellent Medieval Heraldic Stud (went on the Horses leather) ;D
Very cool Roman Bronze Bead (design I have not yet seen)
Debased Roman Silver - Julia Domna :)

Saxon Sceat circa 7th Century (might be a rare Series V, type 7?). Very surprised by this, I only got my 1st & 2nd Sceat last year, so to get this so early in the year, I can't ask for a much better start in difficult times!

UPDATED:
Only 11 of this type of Sceat are recorded! :icon_thumright:

The silver is great but I'm guessing it was the stud that made your day. I'd be good with either right about now.

The Sceat made my year, might be less than 20 recorded. The stud I have about 3 other examples but with differing designs.

IP just found out that only 11 examples are Recorded!

That's what I get for skipping right to the pictures! :D

Laziness!

oh go dig a cartwheel.

Cheap shot >:( :D

How cheap, one penny or two?

depends on the time period, a penny was a lot of money :D

2010, and a penny is a lot of money in my house :-\

Anybody want to buy an XP that can't find cartwheel pennies ;D

Glad to see the chip I installed is working.

:D :D :D :D :D :D

Crusader, congratulations on the Sceat and everything else. Be careful jumping up and
down on your spade. I was doing the same thing last weekend and the next thing
i know i am on the ground. Thought i broke my wrist. The first thing i did was to
look around and see if anyone saw me. Nobody around but my partner in this
100 acre field and he didn't see me. I know it had to look funny.

Thankfully only had a few painful misses of the spade where the outer edge scraps up the inside of my ankle. (not yesterday but previous digs)

Nice finds Cru - they say only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun - I hate to think what the author of that saying would say about detecting in the middle of winter ;D

All the best for the New Year
