First Button Ever: Confederate Script "I"- Updated Pics

This is my first post with pics, so bear with me....Sunday my friend and I ventured out into the cold and frozen ground of West Virginia to hunt a site that we believe to be a possible civil war camp. It has been detected for years, but we found a spot that was definitely overlooked. We have found a handful of drip lead, Burnside and Gallagher cartridges, and over 60 dropped bullets; and my first button ever. I have been looking for any kind of civil war button and this little gem came out of the ground from about 18 inches. We decided to dig down into the permafrost, near where the drip lead and most bullets were found, in hopes that we could get a little deeper and possibly find something we could be missing.

Sure enough, the first spot we started to dig yielded a mid to high 80 on my DFX. We dug down about 8 more inches and out popped my first button ever. It is a beautiful Confederate Script "I". The button made our day and gave us a lot of promise that there is a lot more out there. It goes to show that when people say, "Sure you can metal detect, but you won't find anything, it's been metal detected for years" that no one really knows what is still in the ground and it is always worth the hunt.

I'm looking forward to a thaw, so that we can dig a little deeper and see if there are any more little gems out there. If anyone has any approaches on how to go about digging a civil camp site I would greatly appreciate it.
------------------------
I wanted to say thanks for all the comments and helpful hints. A special thanks for the Borat Award. It is getting a little sunnier here and I am itching to head back to our spot. I wanted to also post a pic of the relics my friend has found at the same spot where I unearthed the Script "I". I am really hoping we have a possible hut site, but we may not be able to find out until the spring. Notice the bullet in the bottom left of the case. It is partially formed. Looks like someone had to get away quick.

That's a nice Script I You all had a good day. The bullets with the high ring on them look like Richmond Lab Sharps. when digging a civil war camp just hunt slow and listen for those deep faint signals.

Re: First Button Ever: Confederate Script "I"

Sounds like hut-digging depth that some of those finds came from. I would dig the huts out, if the camp was a winter camp, or a semi-permanent one. (With land owner's permission of course.) There are websites that will give you more information if you get into hut-digging. That Reb button is a great find :headbang:

Regards,

Buckles
