The Dierks Penta tag came off of lumber from Dierks Lumber Co. Dierks, Arkansas....where do you live????that lumber was sent all over the country....I had a Pioneer 101...good little detector...found lots of goodies with it....now I use the Ace 250 and I am very happy with it....I still use my Pioneer 202 from time to time....see ya later :icon_thumleft:

I live outside of Manila, AR. I looked up Dierks and from what I could find, they made wooden fence posts and Utility poles. I hope to get a nicer detector some day if I keep up this hobby. But a lot of what I read on here most of the guys & gals that use detectors with all the bells and whistles still detect in all metal mode and dig everything anyway. So I might as well not be in too big of a hurry for an upgrade.
Thanks Pud for the info and thanks for looking. 8)

Thanks DMAN and Spooky.

Are YOU happy with it?
Yep for now I'm tickled with it. I read
somewhere that a real photographer with a cheap camera
can take much better pictures than an amateur with an
expensive camera. From my experience with my Pioneer 101
and reading posts here, it seems the same applies to metal
detecting.

I'm slowly learning my detector and how it reacts to different
metals and soil. I hate to pass up a target even if it seems to
indicate trash. One day I dug out about 20 old tin budwiser cans
just to make sure there wasn't any good junk under it. They were
pretty deteriorated. I guess it must have been 35 or 40 years since
tin cans were used for beverages.
Thanks for looking, Yard Digger

Re: Treasure or Junk! What my yard has giving up.

Thanks Spooky, I bought this detector several years ago.
Used it a little, but not enough to learn it. I have to say,
a person can get pretty darn discouraged real fast, digging
up old nails and junk.
Well back then I didn't have Treasure Net Forum. Since I
pulled out the Pioneer and started up with it again, I started
reading Treasure Net and other forums. And the posts and
pics have been encouragement to me to keep trying. Even the
pull tab pics are encouraging, but most of all they add to the
hobby a realization that you have to get thru the junk to get
to the good. If it's easy, it ain't treasure or just plain luck. :sign13:

Junk is not junk...it's junque :laughing9: No, really you are going to dig a lot of trash, but once you start learning the tones each metal makes, then it will help you a lot. I really like that jar lid, that's a new one on me cause I never seen one like that before. There's treasures to be found under your feet, so just keep at it and next thing you'll be posting gold & silver. Happy hunting!!

I haven't either, I'm gonna show it to my Aunt, she use to do a lot of canning. I told her about
it today and she said that years ago people use to can their food in tin cans and that it could
be a lid for that.

Thanks for the reply and your encouraging words RR.

Yeah, I thought it was junk. Thanks for confirming my suspicion. ;D

I've found quite a few pennies here in the yard, all memorials. I told
my wife that any detectorist could tell we're poor, because all we ever
lose is pennies. :tongue3:

If you would write down all the words embossed on the jar lid and "Google" some of the wording, you might be able to find some information about it. I'm trying to read more, but it not clear enough for me to see. Let us know what you find out.

Will do RR. But I'm not able yet to read all the wording myself.
I got to read up on "cleaning and preserving" and see if I can
get the words to show more detail.

That jar lid is really cool, I can see

"Tested and approved
by the
Good HouseKeeping Institute
Conducted by
Goodhousekeeping Magazine"
Also see the words " closure" and others that are less clear, maybe try a soft toothbrush and mild soap and see what that does, then maybe if not then some toothpaste or cream of tartar, but test it first on the back, let us know what you find out and nice work and keep plugging away and most of all HH!

Thanks Chuck, I'll try those things and post my findings and hopefully a better
picture.

I've never heard of using cream of tartar for cleaning.

Chuck.

Hello RR, Chuck and TN Forum,
I finally got around to doing some research on that jar lid and here is what
I found so far:
On the web at: http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/product-testing/history/about-good-housekeeping-seal-2

In May 1941, the FTC issued an order directing Good Housekeeping to cease and desist from the use of seals declaring that its advertised products had been tested and approved. It declared that, while tests were made by Good Housekeeping, such tests were generally not sufficient to assure fulfillment of the claims made for such products. The FTC found that the magazine was publishing advertising containing deceptive statements about specific advertised products. A cease and desist order was signed by Hearst, and the words "Tested and Approved" were deleted and replaced with the words "Replacement or Refund of Money Guaranteed by Good Housekeeping."

So now, I know at least that the lid was manufactured before May 1941. About 69
years old. I haven’t tried any more cleaning and preserving techniques yet, but I’ll keep you posted when I find out more.

Re: Treasure or Junk! What my yard has giving up.

An update on the jar lid. I got it cleaned up enough so that the
details of the GoodHouseKeeping seal is more readable. It was
made by Presto Jar and Closure. And as I said in an earlier post
it's at least 69 years old.

Below my photo is a photo from http://www.timepassagesnostalgia.com/#
with a complete closure including a jar.

looks like a piece of garbage to me. The only good find is the 1960 penny. The other stuff I would have thrown away.
