I hear ya on the the ground being hard as a Rock, best bet is find a nice woods with a good cover of leaves. I bet you can dig there.

Once here in Ohio, I cut a quarter in half with a miners pick, I never did get the whole darn quarter out of the ground. LOL

probably two feet of rock hard ground under 8" of snow that of witch ths bottom 3" is like solid ice and more snow on its way.
