Someone more knowledgable than me will have to answer the cleaning question . You have a top of the line axe . If you do clean it up and rehaft it you will have one of the best using axes ever made .

I found a similar axe head on an old home site several weeks ago. I'm curious to find out how old it is also, no visible making on mine. Ron

Try cleaning it, then look for marks.
