well i am still, figuring out the old vintage detector i bought off ebay.
things i have learned, manual ground balance is tough, but once you get it finding stuff is alot easier.
i have very trashy soil around here. here is what i have found for now. i have been looking for old houses, to possibly find older coins, the plow came from a old house, i don't know if it's a new or old
plow.

Yep, it takes a while to figure out a detector you haven't used before, but that's part of the fun. The best way, as you've found out, is to use it..and read everything you can about the detector. Digging targets is the only way to find out how the detector responds. I keep a trash bucket that I put all my trash targets in. I use these, along with the good targets, to bench test the detector and try different settings, etc. Good luck and keep swingin'!

I know guys who have been detecting for 30 years and even they say they learn something new every time they go out detecting.
Practice makes perfect.

Good work!!
What kind of detector is it?
Digging everything is the only way to tell what is good and what is not,
After you learn more about your machine call you start to tell (from the sounds and needle) What not
to dig, I have found some great things that didn't sound so good!! Happy hunting
