its commonly called Arras or "marriage money" -- in the latin marrige custom of mexico -- mexican brides are given 13 gold coins as "proof" from the groom that he will support her "for life" and work and be a good provider for her---- by accepting the money --- she accepts him as her "husband" and swears to be a good and loyal wife to him --these are modern "peso fantasy pieces" used to fill this custom in modern times -- they have about 1/2 a grams worth of 14 to 22 kt gold in them---or about 1 /100 th of a oz of pure gold by weight --so they are worth about $10 in gold melt value .---- with gold at 1000 per oz

thus its not a "real" gold coin * from 1865

They are fantasy tokens and are listed in Krause. Many different varieities exist and in different metal combinations, 8K, 9K, 14K, gold plated, silver, silver plated, etc.

please note --- in the ad that states it was obtained from a "estate" sale --(ie) a old lady died and her "wedding coins" went up for grabs -- the seller either doesn't know what these coins really are or is trying to mislead folks on purpose --which one ? who knows -- pleae note too these coins do not have a "value" marked upon them --and no coins were known to be minted of this type in 1865 in mexico -- they were 20 peso gold pieces made in 1865 but they are marked that -- plus these coins are clearly listed in coin collector books as "fantasy" coins / tokens

if one can sell a $10 or so worth of gold "fantasy" coin for $40 plus several dollars for shipping -- one can clean up -- of the less knowledgible folks.

however since you traded $5 in silver for $10 in gold you did ok.
