Folks,
I've been picking my way through a private property that saw a lot of action from the 1890's to this day. I got permission to hunt the entire 180 acres last year and have found a bunch of wheats, buffalos, my first V-nickel and a number of artifacts (marbles, lead toy figures, bullets, eating utensils, etc.). Today I had 30 minutes to take a mental break from something I was writing and I found a "hot spot." The take for the day included three very toasted wheats (the fertilizer in the field does this to all the wheats I've found). Not sure about the dates except I think one is a 1944. Also found a bullet, a blue marble and a 1917 buffalo nickel. Lastly, my best find for the short hunt was only my second barber; a 1903 dime. It is shown as taken out of the ground with just a rinse in the nearby stream. All finds were found with my Minelab Explorer II and all targets were 6-10 inches deep.
Captn_SE who taught me most of what I know about using the Explorer always told me never look at the numbers (digital screen) always listen to the tones. After I find a seemingly good target on the smart screen I like to switch to digital to see what the detector thinks the target is. If I had followed the digital today (even on the silver) I would not have dug a single one of these targets, save the buff.
BTW, the WLH I found at the same site last summer on a night hunt but we did not have Internet then so I never posted it until now. It was about 10 inches deep and did not sound like silver until the very end but it was a repeatable signal in all directions and deep so I dug it.
I'll be heading back to the site as soon as I can. Vegetation has not yet poked through the woods or fields yet so I can get my coil close to the soil. I probably have two weeks until it will be too hard to detect except in the field.
