We've hunted this 17th century village for years but never bothered with some of the lower, wet spots between the store and woods - there were always better places. Although low, some of it was surprisingly sandy. Most fields around this old place have produced loads of relics so its not out of the ordinary to dig finds from different centuries. One area produced several Spanish silvers. I NEVER GOT ONE! But I did manage to get this gold Elgin pocket watch and save it from more plow damage. Some other interesting finds too (most of the modern stuff not shown). The 1819 large cent was on top of the ground. I saw it before the loop ever made a sound.

The watch has all kinds of numbers scratched into it. It looks like 12-7-34. Could that be the date?

your watch dates around circ.1890. numbers you see scatched inside the case are watchmakers scibble when the watch was serviced or broken and when he fixed it. :P

Years ago, it was very common for a jeweler to scratch a date inside a watch when it was brought in to be adjusted, oiled, cleaned or repaired. Some watches that were very well taken care of, especially the gold ones, would have many dates scratched inside.

I vote banner as well, the scroll work on that baby is awesome and it must weigh quite a bit making it a huge find imo. I would trade a silver for that any day:)

Nice watch....I found a gold watch case a few years back that was from the same time period...not as fancy as yours though.

Congrats
