Rare copper from field

[Arctica]

It was nice sunny afternoon and we (I, my g/f and Mr. Aquila) went to the fields. We found copper coins and some musketballs from the Great War of the North.

My finds:

Some Finnish coins from 1870 to 1963
Russian 2 copeks 1810 and half copek from 19th century
Swedish Öres from 17th and 18th century
Musketballs and some pieces of lead


The smallest coin was the best. 1 penni 1882 is numismatically rareness, not very valuable because coin shape is so bad. However it is one of the rarest Finnish coins.

Horseman copek (1689-1725)
Some musketballs

These are wonderful finds. I like seeing all of the old coppers, especially the very early ones.

That is a nice clay pipe bowl fragment too.

Great hunt!!! Pretty nice, when you can find a small coin collection in one hunt.
Believe it or now, I have found a couple of the older Penni coins in the U.S., when hunting there.
Have them in my collection of foreign coins.....don't think any of them are rare.
Keep posting. Love to see the foreign coins in this forum.

Believe it or now, I have found a couple of the older Penni coins in the U.S., when hunting there.

I’m not surprised, because more than 300000 Finnish people moved to United States as emigrants between 1860-1923.

Today from same site but new field. Nine old coppers and musketballs from the heart of the battlefield of The Great Northern war. I also dug medieval buckle only to lost it propably dropped back to the field. Last photo is exactly what I think about that.

Great finds! I have a question if you can help. I thought that there arevery Stricker rules about metal detecting through out Scandinavia. Like if you did it you'd be totally screwed! Can you shed any light on this for me?

Thats Sweden . First metal detecting become illegal in islands of Gotland and Öland. Then whole country .

I’m not sure about other Scandinavian countries, but here in Finland metal detecting is legal. Only permission you need is the landowner permission. Of course there are some historical sites and nature conservation areas where detecting and digging is forbidden.

We also have a “relics law” that says, that any find more than 100 years old belongs to state of Finland. This means that you have to report (E-mail and picture) all finds more than 100 years old to National Board of Antiquities. They have rights to buy your finds but in practical all finds from 17th century and newer are so common that they just say “Thanks for the picture and finding report. We put them to the archive and you can keep your finds”
