Speaking of the worst day -How bout first day-12" hole -w/hole pic now!!

Just got my new Minelab Quattro Mp on Thursday. I read the manual, charged the batteries. Rained on Fri, snowed today but got it out anyway.First sweep showed a coin fairly deep, checked it several times ( even with old detector that did not pick it up ). Tried other areas, but came back to the first spot. Decided to dig in my front yard, 10 feet from porch. I started digging with the digger that came with the detector ( like trying to spit into the wind, you know what I mean ). Anyway, I get the artilary out and dig a 1 Ft sq hole by 1 Ft deep. Finally I find the target, a 1976 Lincoln penny, but it was a coin and it was 12" deep, no BS.I think. Instead of disapointment, ah the possibilities!

PS: added this pic, I'm sure all have seen this before! the digger is alittle over 12" not a great pic, hope to post some soon that are of actual substance.

Finding a penny at the depth of 12 inches is a lesson learned...Now you can see the potential of that machine....good luck on future hunts.....

A 76 at 12 inches? Ground musta been turned.... if it hasn't, just think how deep any good oldies must be!

The Seeker,
I'm just getting started. I ordered the book from Dixie-Metal Detectors (David S.
) so I'll get a little head start, i've got alot of trial & error to go.

The soil here is fairly sandy. So in some spots I've routinely pulled up 60's and 70's clad from 10 inches. And like you, instead of dissapointment I thought of the potential and couldn't wait to get to more solid terra firma. And when I did I wasn't dissapointed. It's a great detector!! Good luck with it. Jeffro,
Don't think the ground was turned. I had up-rooted a tree from this general area some 8 years ago and had filled in the hole with some dirt from the back yard. Guess there was a 1976 Lincoln in there some where. I'll take pics in the morning of the hole, this is not a fabrication.

RVbvetter,
I think having rained the day before and also 1/2" of snow on ground helped with the detection, also there is the possibility of having unearthed the wrong target. I did check hole as well as dirt pile and there were no more targets after retrieving the penny.

Re: Speaking of the worst day -How bout first day-12" hole -

The Beep,
Don't know exactly how other dectectors react or detect, but I can say the Quattro is a far cry from my first metal detecting in 1978. I worked at a nuclear fuel facility that had a few out-of spec hand held security detectors. I managed to get one out of the garbage and take it home one day. I mounted it on a broom handle. I lived next to a lake so I went detecting on the lake shore with this " Sanford & Son" looking contraption( no discrimination), duck tape and all. I found about 1/2 dozen horseshoes and all kinds of early 1900's iron.
Thus the itch began!

With that new Minelab, you might as well get you a bigger shovel, you'll probably need it.
Great machines, congrats...
Good luck, & Happy hunting~

Leon,
I'm thinking about taking my tractor w/backhoe attachment with me from now on. I spent today digging alot. Good signals, but no paydirt! I need a good digger that will work for beer!!! I could dig a hole to China !!

Did your detector indicate it was a penny or just a coin sized targed or? I'm not familiar with the way that machine operates. That one hole would have been it for the day for me. Sometimes modern technology is too good! Monty
