I've heard them referred to as sportsman's buttons.. If I remember right, they were popular in the early 19th century and are a welcomed addition to any collection

umrgolf is right it's a sportsmans button. They were popular in the mid to late 1800's. I've dug quite a few in civil war camps including one exactly like yours, tin back and all. I dug it in an 1861 camp of the 1st LA.

I agree a very late 1800s sports button or hunts button, as we call them. I like them all :icon_thumright:

It has been said that upper-crust Englishmen had more time for their dogs than for their children. Dogs were vital to the rituals of hunting, which were pleasurable; children made demands, which were tiresome.

What does this have to do with this post? Nothing.
Just thought I'd throw it out there :D

Nice Sports, hunts or sportsman button!

very cool button. i've heard what 4-H is saying as well, which is one reason why Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' was such a huge hit.
To think that little bowser could be a terror on the moors...
