A couple of firsts for me. ;D Had never dug a shield nickel or a V nickel before. I think maybe someone with a minelab had been in this yard and dug all the high tones. Hard to believe I never pulled a wheat or merc out of this yard, but 3 old nickels. The 1896 V was the first signal I dug, after swinging for 30 seconds maybe, the 1868 shield and the 1882 shield were all in a 12 foot radius and all between 4 and 5 inches. Something peculiar about the date on the 1882, and thought I had an overdate at first, but I'm now pretty sure it is whats referred to as a 'filled 2'. The silver quarter and and sterling charm were way in the back of the property. The silver charm also has a neat back mark that I'm not sure about, but almost looks like a race car. I opted to try a cleaning method on 2 of the nickels, just because they are only for my collection. I like the way they turned out, I could get all the purple of the shield but I'm gonna leave it. The button was a tailor here in town in the 1870's. Anyway, thanks for looking all, HH, Griff

Those Shield nickels are in great shape.I found an 1882 last week and its nowhere near as good of shape as those. The soil here in N.C. is rough on nickels. That charm is sweet too.

There's just something about seeing the flip side of those Shield nickels. Just like that big 5 sitting in the middle of all those stars! Now, if I could only find one, it would be even better. Great recoveries. You've got some real nice finds.

I hit spots like that too where I swear a silver shooter has gone through and ignored the low nickel tones ! Which means he would ignore gold tones as well ! Nothing wrong with shield and V nickels though ! Just look at the BANNER ! MaineRelic,

Great finds, for sure!! Tennessee is also tough on nickles!
You may be right about the Minelab users however, seven of my detecting buddies started out (in the early 1980's) with their units tuned to discriminate everything except silver!!!
Now at the time, silver was at a premium (If not mistaken, a silver Quarter was worth $8.00, in silver alone!) so needless to say, we have since went back and found lots and lots of coins (some deeper silver too!) jewelry and cool relics left by them and others.

Great finds! Happy Hunting!! Regards, skypilot02
