Not to bad for 2 hours of diggin'

I got to dig at my jobsite for about 2 hours after work today. I Md'd the site we are getting ready to clear in the '70's. The best finds I got there was a baby US boxplate and a couple union spurs. The property belongs to a small airport now has not been dug in a good while. It's along a small creek and in the 70's there were oak trees 3 and 4 feet in diameter. In the 80's the trees were taken out and the stumps removed We are to start stripping the topsoil on monday so I don't know how much more I'll get to dig it. I can only go on days we work. I plan on getting up there early Monday morning and dig an hour or two before we start work. Today I dug a Navy cuff, an eagle button and badly eaten Indian head penny, a ringtail sharps, 6 Joslyn carbines, 3 sharps and 5 .44 sages. I also got 5 iron buckles and some melted lead and a few other odds and ends. Nothing really great but not to bad for 2 hours

Come on up. You need to bring wire cutter to get throught the 8 foot fence that have around the place. It has 3 rows of barbed wire on top so have fun trying to climb over ha ha. Also if you see a white pick up with lights on top coming run like heck. Now you know why the place hasn't been dug in years. I really didn't know if I would find much or not since the trees and stumps were taken out years ago but evidently not much ground was moved.
I'm going to go back before work Monday AM for sure

Good CW relics saved VY. Sounds like that site will soon be lost forever so good luck getting what you can. HH, Quindy.

Re: Not to bad for 2 hours of diggin'

Try this.

Rent a black crown vic. Wear a black suit with a white shirt and res tie.

If the white truck shows up, tell them to return to their post a remain vigilant as you are removing ordinance, some of it possibly still live (technically true)as an independant contractor for homeland security (technically not true).

OR, have Maine Relic go first because he has cutters and is fast. While they are chasing him, you can get in some swinging.

Nice digs for two years let alone two hours.

You'll have to have them drop the topsoil at your house so you can sift through it!
Hate to think what they'll be sending off to fill in that dirt. :-S

Fathead, I like your second idea best.......but Maine Relic might not second the motion. :laughing7:
(I'm trying to picture it in my mind.....truck coming down the road in a hurry, Maine Relic running out throught the bushes, a
helicopter overhead, p.a. system blaring......and here comes a guy, behind them, swinging a metal detector like crazy......
WOW!!!! Probably able to make a movie about that one.)

Re: Not to bad for 2 hours of diggin'

Some great ideas here guys  :laughing7: When can you get down here MaineRelic :laughing7: I think all of the topsoil will be staying onsite as we will need topsoil to cover everything when we are done. They are going to build plane hangars there but it will be about 5 years before they are built. Once the site is on grade it will all be covered with 6 inches of topsoil then seeded to keep it from eroding away. So hopefully I'll be able to pick through it once we strip it. I wish I could dig it before we strip it though. I'm going to try to dig at least an hour before we start work in the morning.

Wow, nice finds!! If you need any help, I drive a mean Backhoe, LOL I also have a CDL, so I could drive the dump truck, take all the soil to a very private place and check it out real good for you, or you could even help.. LOL

Again, Congrats, hope to see more finds from this site.

Re: Not to bad for 2 hours of diggin'

Thanks for the offer Ringfinder but the place is muddy and full of ticks and snakes. I would hate to put anyone through all that for a few pieces of metal. :laughing7:
Here's a pic of the Baby US boxplate I dug there. I dug it on 11/2/75. The buckle above it was dug at another spot. They just happen to be in the same scan.
