I had a day off after six days straight working and got up early because I didn't want to waste single minute. Decided to hit a few spots near my own neighborhood so I don't get too worn out before heading to work again the following day.

Dug around some old oak trees and came up with some interesting pieces. One looks like it was poured into a mold (the star metal hinge looking one) and is very heavy for it's size. Then I tried the other side of the same tree and came up with the ornate flower compact piece. No idea on what that is about but I liked it. Better than finding bottle caps and pop tabs!

All sorts of odds and ends today - letter opener shaped like a sword, keys, tokens and even a wristwatch! My heart was pumping when I dug up the rings but they turned out to be just some dime store junk. Still very fun to find! LOL! The strangest things come out of the ground! Especially in parks that were built over old neighborhoods. I'm planning on going back to that one this weekend as I only made a small dent in it today. My daughter is going to be staying with me in a week and I am going to try to introduce her to this wonderful hobby. Thinking of working it out where we both get to have out own days. She gets to do what she wants to do on HER day and I get to do my detecting on MINE. That way we both end up happy. (I'm sure she will want to go to the mall or something but she does like to be outside, so it will be a good time all around. Pack a lunch and make a day out of it.)

Okay. I'm starting to ramble here. Time to put the photos to this post and shut up.

Thanks for looking at my newbie digs!

Congrats. I dug an almost identical lead piece earlier this year. It also has the star in the center. I was told it was possibly a carriage decoration. Yours is in a bit better condition though. Keep it comin.

JuJu - A carriage decoration?? Wow! If that's what it is then it will be my oldest find yet! (To date it's been a 1925 wheat penny - lol!) Thanks for the possible Id on that!

jwelch66 - Thanks for the kind comment! My beat up old RS is handy for biking around as it fits in my messenger bag.

Stumpbreaker - My friends all said the same thing! It's pretty darn sharp too! Gave me a little jab when I forgot it was in one of my bag pockets. (Learned to keep my gloves on from now on..)

Here is a pic of the one I found. It was in real close proximity to ol Ft. Steilacoom here in Washington State. It came from the same field that has produced over 100 3 ringers and various other artifacts.

Black and JuJU,
I found the same star piece but had no clue what it was. Part of a carriage makes sense since I found it next to a location that had an old carriage house that was knocked down many years ago. When I get home I will look for it and post a picture.
NJ

P.S. I guess these piece got around since they have been found in WA, MN and NJ. Coast to Coast..

Guess I'm odd man out here. I'm more interested in the Army Corp of Engineers piece and the token/good luck piece with the lamp showing. Could you give close-ups of them too? Please?

Thanks for all the nice comments!! I posted a couple of the pieces in the "What Is It" thread and a couple members have said the round piece looks to be from the Victorian Era. (Which would be most cool! I'm FINALLY starting to dig some older items!! Whoo-hoo!)

Tuberale - I'll post a couple photos of the Army Corps of Engineers coin you asked about.

I went back to the same park and dug some more change and a generic looking token - but the only interesting piece I found was a small "Tie-Tack" looking thing. It looks pretty ornate and is very crusted up. (I'll have to do some reading in the "how to" section on cleaning items) This will be my first day without a metal detecting hunt in 15 days! I have to run some errands and go in to work early as they are short-handed, but I will be hitting this same spot on Sunday or Monday in hopes of finding some more good items!

Thanks again!!
