Had a great time with Tom76 Yesterday. we hit an old house that was built around 1865, I dug this watch fob with a sub, I think it may be the USS Moniter from 1862 Ironclad days, but I am doing some more research to verify my guess, I have read in the past, that some fobs were made from the actual metal from the ship as souvenirs. I will post the rest of my finds later this week thanks for looking.

It does look more like a submarine than the Monitor, maybe more research will clear it up. Interesting find.

What about the C.S.S. ALBEMARLE? (on second thought maybe not, but I'll leave it because it's interesting)

Also Steamships were popular on watch fobs.

Nice find.

It looks like a submarine. Look at the "pipes" above the structure. Those are probably snorkle and perescope.

If it is an engraving of the Monitor, its not made from the ships metal, it sunk off of Cape Hatteras NC during a storm on December 31, 1862. 16 of 62 crewmen died.

It was rediscovered in 1973.

im confused did he actually post the picture of yours, or was this just supposed to be an example and not the actual one he found?

By golly it is the same photo. What a coincidence! Hard to imagine why a photo made in Chicago area would turn up in Washington.

Cool find(s). ;D

ahh.. that clears it up, just a bit confusing with a "I dug this fob" usually for it not to be some form of plagiarism you list a source in explanation to the photo. It would be really cool to see a picture of his though to compare them. NICE FINDS TO BOTH OF YOU.
