I found this buckle this past weekend but didn't know what I had until I posted it in the "What Is It" Board. This is a Civil War Carbine Sling Buckle used on the Sling or Strap of a rifle. I was at a house in NW Missouri that was built in the 1850's looking for old coins but was really surprised when Civil War Relics started showing up. Two weekends ago I found 2 US BOX Plates in pretty good condition. After finding out what this buckle was called I searched the internet for other pictures and could not find one that looks as nice as the one I found. I was really surprised with the condition of this relic. I am not much of a relic hunter (I mostly detect for coins) but will proudly display this in my display case.

There are lots of Fine (and valuable) relics to be found at old coin sites. So always be on the lookout for them. And always post everything you find, in case there is a nice relic hiding in the junk brass. Someone on Tnet will see it and ID it for you.

That's a GREAT buckle there. You won't see a nicer one in dug condition. Well done!

I hope you don't mind me posting a couple pic's.The one I found has the maker's mark (E GAYLORD CHICOPEE MASS.) and the inspector's mark(T J SHEPARD).They also had US stamped as well and if you have all three they'll bring well over $200.The one you have is worth in the ballpark of $150 +/- ......Great dig, she's in beautiful shape, just like mine ;D Congrat's :icon_thumright:

Hi Outback , Great buckle , thought you might like to know there is a batwing sling tip and a snap swivel , that may be hiding near where you found the carbine buckle . Hope this pic helps . Nice dig :icon_thumleft: CMD
