Hi, been awhile since I posted anything but I was very surprised by this find last weekend at Golden Gate Park. I had hunted most of the day with nothing to show for it. It wasn't until the last hour of daylight (and about 30 minutes of dark!! ;D ) that I managed to pull a Merc, silver earring, and a very small what I think may be gold ring. These finds alone would have made for a successful day and I was ready to call a day because it was getting so dark when I got a nice deep low tone. I swung over it a few times and decided to head for the car while I could still find it! But... I am SO Addicted to this hobby I dug a plug and after about 10 minutes of searching by feel I found this 1876 Shield Nickel and in pretty good shape too. It's a bit rare to find something like this in California, especially at a park hunted by everyone with a detector since detectors were invented! Anyway, hope you like the pics.

Now that's a good looking one! That is a tough coin to find in such nice shape.

Cheers,

Looked good on my 24" dual monitor setup! I guess I wanted to make it "larger than life". :sign10: Do you think I should re-size it smaller?

its up to you, I would normally have it a bit smaller, just so you don't need to move it about a bit

Nice find. Just continues to prove there is no real "hunted out" place. If you're diligent (or lucky) you'll always find something!

Thanks everyone for the great replies. I appreciate that they came from folks who know how many holes one must dig to get something good!! :laughing7:

As a side note, I know this nickel looks really good compared to most of the older orange worn out looking blobs of nickels that I've found. For example I found a V nickel in the same general area and it looked like I would think, rusty etc. Any ideas why this shield nickel would come out so good looking? Thanks

Holy mother! I've never seen a dug shield that nice. The few I've dug required forensics. Nicely done!
